Here i have got friends and relatives to put there finger prints in a table i had drawn. They done this by placing each individual finger on both hands in ink and then printed it onto the paper. I asked them to do this 6 times so i could find at least one decent print of each finger which i could analyse.

On the right hand the most successful prints i found where:

Thumb- attempt 5

Index Finger-attempt 5 and 6

Middle Finger- attempt 4 and 5

Ring Finger- attempt 5

Pinky- attempt 5

The least successful prints where:

Thumb- 1 and 2

Index Finger- 1, 2 and 3

Middle Finger- 1 and 2

Ring Finger- 1, 2 and 3

Pinky- 1 and 2

On the Left hand i found that the most successful were:

Thumb- attempt 4 and 5

Index Finger- attempt 4 and 5

Middle Finger- attempt 3 and 4

Ring Finger- attempt 5

Pinky- attempt 3

The least successful prints where:

Thumb- 1, 2 and 3

Index Finger- 1 and 2

Middle Finger- 1 and 2

Ring Finger- 1 and 2

Pinky- 1 and 2

I have noticed the better effective prints were attempts 4 and 5. This is because there wasn't too much ink on the finger because it was used on attempts 1 and 2 and there wasn't too little ink unlike attempt 6. Also the amount of pressure which the person puts on the paper would effect the print.

  1. Do a search for Saul Steinberg's illustrations using fingerprints - if you can;t make a font out of fingerprints, can you make an illustration?
